Can Time In Medical School Count Towards Years Of Service
- #one
I did Army ROTC in college, and have since been on an education delay for medical school. I know for HPSP your time in service doesn't start to count until you graduate med schoolhouse, but I've heard a rumor that if yous did ROTC, med school counts as time in service. Does everyone know if this is true?

I did not do ROTC, only I did practice a 3 year HPSP scholarship for optometry school. I started every bit an O-iii with 0 years of service. I had a friend who did ROTC and was on educational delay for med school, and so did residency and fellowship. When he came on active duty, he was an O-iv with something like 8 years of service (from what I think, which could exist way off).

Physicians are O-iii'due south at the completion of medical school. They are promoted to O-four once they take been out of medical school for 6 years. These are basically automated promotions regardless if any or all of your training was in the armed services, subsidized by the military, or noncombatant.
From the minute you graduate medical schoolhouse, you start what the military calls "Creditable Service". This fourth dimension is what counts for your promotions mentioned above as well equally some of the physician special pay. Promotions above the O-4 level are not automatic and require you to really jump through hoops.
Fourth dimension in Service simply accumulates while you are on Agile Duty, Reserve or National Baby-sit service, and during your Agile Duty medical schoolhouse rotations for HPSP students. Sometimes if y'all were already in the military prior to going to medical schoolhouse (on HPSP programme), you will erroneously exist given credit for the time you're in med schoolhouse as Time in Service. This volition make your paychecks much nicer, but...A discussion of caution...They volition eventually catch this and have all of the actress coin back from you. Which means that yous could go months with little pay. It'south better to bring information technology to their attending if they screw upwardly. I speak from feel because the exact matter happened to me.
I'g not completely sure if this changes with ROTC, but I'd be willing to bet that it'south the same. I'd check with whoever handles your administrative details...Physician Education/Deferment Office in the Air Forcefulness. There should be an equivalent office in the Army. At least they tin can point you towards someone that may know for sure.
